Worship Ministry Team (formerly the Worship and Music
Ministry Team)
The willingness of members to be part of our weekly worship experiences
is what makes it all happen. The ministry team meets monthly with
the Pastor, Vicar and Cantor to give feedback and provide input
for the planning of worship for the months ahead. The team aids
in the selection of liturgies for the various church season, works
on choir schedules and recruitment, helps in the planning of special
services, manages the replacement and distribution of hymnals
and handles other related issues involving the worship life of
St. Andrew.
There are many other roles in the Worship and Music life of St.
Andrew. If you are interested in helping in any of the following
ways, please contact the church office:
Altar Care participants take care of providing
bread for Communion, preparing the wine and bread, cleaning up
after communion and taking down the altar flowers.
Acolytes (4th through 8th graders) assist in
the worship of the congregation by distributing communion glasses,
lighting and extinguishing candles, carrying the cross in worship
and aiding with any other special aspects of the worship service:
ex. a Gospel processional.
The Assisting Minister reads the lessons, leads
parts of the liturgy and prayers and participates in the distribution
of the communion.
Communion Servers participate in the distribution
of Holy Communion for each service normally by serving wine.
Ushers distribute bulletins, receive the offering,
carry the Communion elements forward, direct worshipers to Communion
and assist people in every way they can as they arrive and depart
from the church.
Greeters greet people arriving at the door for
worship.
Choirs at St. Andrew currently include Chapel
Choir, Children’s Choir, Sonshine
Kids, Jubilate Bells and other special
music groups as arranged for a specific occasion. In the past,
these have included bell choirs, vocal ensembles and instrumental
groups.
Home Communion Ministers take communion to “shut-in”
members of the congregation on the third Sunday of each month.
This is done by the Pastor, Vicar and a team of lay members.
Witness Ministry Team (formerly the Evangelism and Membership
Committee)
This ministry team works on sharing the faith by contacting guests
to welcome them to our community, and contacting less active members
to encourage them to become more active. The Witness Ministry
Team oversees ministry events like SOAP
(St. Andrew Lutheran Church Sports Outreach and Activities Program),
the church website, pictoral/membership directories, Invite-A-Friend
weekend, the congregation picnic, 2x4 fellowship gatherings, Sunday
fellowship between services and other special ministry events
and projects.
Support Ministry Team (formerly the Stewardship Committee)
Support Ministry Team members are involved in helping the congregation
learn more about the stewardship of life, including our time,
our abilities and our resources. We are educating ourselves and
one another in many areas. People are needed who are willing to
be part of both long-term and short-term projects. Every November,
the Support Ministry Team holds a pledge drive and passes out
“Time and Talent” worksheets in order to plan and
budget for the year ahead. At the end of the drive, there is a
celebration luncheon.
St. Andrew has launched a 5-year campaign in preparation for
the 50th anniversary of the congregation. “Counting Up to
50” is an attempt by St. Andrew to raise an extra $50,000
each year for 5 years to help support specific ministries and
needs of the congregation including: Lutheran Services of Iowa’s
“It’s About the Kids” Campaign, the ELCA Chaplaincy
Program at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa
City, St. Andrew’s Internship program and various capital
improvements for the church building. If you are interested in
giving or donating, please contact the church office.
Learning Ministry Team
Learning never ceases, which is why the Learning Ministry Team
coordinates Sunday School (Pre-K-8th grade) and Adult Forum (both
between services on Sundays during the school year), Adult Bible
Study (regularly Thursday nights at 7:30), St. Andrew Youth (High
School) learning events, the church library, book fairs, Vacation
Bible School—for ALL ages and a Lenten Gospel Study. Anyone
interested in helping with any of these programs, or interested
in attending any of them please contact the church office for
more information.
The Service Ministry Team offers a variety of ways to serve the
congregation as well as outward into our community and throughout
the world. They collect food donations for families served by
a social service agency. They also provide volunteers once a month
for Green Square Meals. Cards and hot meals are provided for members
after the birth of a child, a severe illness or a death in the
family by this ministry team.

| Also in the area of Service Ministry, congratulations go to Carl and Mary Carson on their reception of the KCRG Channel 9 Jefferson Award for their work with A Promise of Health to bring a mobile medical unit to the Mayan people in the Yucatan. This mobile home is the second in three years to be completely refurbished and shipped to Mexico for use by a doctor who travels to many impoverished Mayan communities to provide basic health services to these people. The Cedar Rapids Rotary Club, which has made A Promise of Health their official international project, has donated $2500 the last two years. This year, the Rotary Club has also teamed up with A Promise of Health to provide additional educational supplies to be carried down in the motor home and given out to those in need. *Update: The Carsons represented Eastern Iowa this June at a "Celebration of Volunteerism" in Washington D.C. to compete for one of five Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Awards for Outstanding Public Service. For more information about A Promise of Health, see their website. |
Facilities Ministry Team (formerly the Property Committee)
The Facilities Ministry Team is responsible for maintaining and
improving our church building. “Cleanup days” are
scheduled as needed, but anyone, whether you are an expert or
just a “handyperson,” with a willing attitude and
some time to give is welcome to help out around the church.
